If a quick answer will do, the best time to travel to Tanzania for wildlife watching purposes would be from June to October, as this period is associated with the dry season and therefore with an increased opportunity to see animals, as well as great game-viewing conditions in most safari destinations. However, what would be considered the best time may vary depending on your destination and interests.
Best Time to Visit Tanzania at a Glance
| Travel Goal | Best Time |
|---|---|
| Best overall wildlife viewing | June to October |
| Best for wildebeest calving | January to February |
| Best for birding | November to April |
| Best value | April to May |
| Best for a Zanzibar combination | June to October or January |
The months from June through October are very attractive since the dry weather forces animals to gather in areas that still have some water left. Also, the parks in Tanzania are open all year round; hence there is no perfect time to visit but rather a time appropriate for you.
Tanzania’s Seasons Explained: Dry vs. Wet
The Safari Seasons in Tanzania may be classified as either the wet season or the dry season. It will depend on what areas of Tanzania you plan to visit and at what altitudes.
Long Dry Season (June – October)
The Tanzania dry season runs from June to October and is usually referred to as the traditional safari season. There is relatively little rainfall, which means that vegetation is sparse and wildlife can be easily spotted around lakes, rivers, and other sources of permanent water.
Another benefit of traveling during the period between June and October is the chance to observe the Serengeti and the Great Migration, as July to September are the months of the dramatic migration northward and possible crossing of the Mara River. According to TANAPA, the period between June and October is good for the migration, while January and February are better for calving.
The downside of the dry season, however, is that it is also the peak time for traveling.
Short Dry Season (January – February)
During January and February, a special type of safari can be experienced. The southern Serengeti and Ndutu areas become very significant as the wildebeest calving season comes, when large numbers of calves are born. The short grass plains are a key area for calving, and births peak in mid-February.
The scenery is usually green compared to the scenery in the dry season, and the atmosphere on a safari is not the same as at the crossing of the wildebeest migration. This makes January-February a good period for those who are more interested in predator action than the crossing.
Long Rains (March – May)
The Tanzania rainy season turns long and wet from about March to May. This period is known as the off-season to most tourists, but this does not make Tanzania a place that does not provide safaris anymore.
The land becomes green, and there are interesting photographic conditions in the sky, and the wildlife does exist. April and May can also be months for traveling, when there is lower tourist traffic.
But there are trade-offs. Rain makes roads hard to pass, and some camps or lodges do not operate during the rainiest time of year. That is why it is important to plan your trip, taking into account the places you want to visit and stay at.
Short Rains (November–December)
The short rains occur in November and December, coming in as occasional showers as opposed to rainfall all through the day. The safari experience can still be great, with chances for photography being amazing because of the fresh scenery.
In addition, migratory birds add another aspect to the wildlife viewing process. In December, prices and availability will be higher due to the Christmas and New Year season.
Best Time by Region: Northern Circuit vs. Southern & Western Circuits
Here is the real question of choice that most Tanzania safari tour guides miss:
Which safari circuit are you visiting?
Tanzania has varying ecosystems; therefore, the best period for visiting is not the same everywhere. For those touring the Northern Circuit, it is much more flexible than what the general rule of visiting during the dry season implies.
Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara) – Good Nearly Year-Round
The Northern Circuit makes up the bulk of any itinerary that one may choose when planning a trip to Tanzania safari circuits. It comprises Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. The tourism board of Tanzania itself offers Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti as an iconic northern circuit.
This part of the country fits well into most times of the year owing to the presence of some destinations that have permanent water and wildlife that remains there. For instance, the crater ecosystem at Ngorongoro has permanent water as well as grazing to support the wildlife all year round.

Southern & Western Circuits (Ruaha, Nyerere/Selous, Katavi) – Dry Season Only
While the Southern and Western Circuit can offer an excellent wilderness experience, the dynamics are different here due to the seasons. At places like Ruaha, the drought season ensures that animals congregate near water bodies like rivers, making them easy to find.
As a result, if Southern and Western Tanzania are the primary target areas, then it will be better to choose the dry season.
At the moment, Proud African Safaris does not run safaris for the Southern and Western Circuit. We only offer safaris in Northern Tanzania and other exciting destinations like Zanzibar.
Best Time for Specific Wildlife Experience
Let’s explore the best time tourists can explore Tanzania’s gems with us.
Best Time for the Great Migration
There is not one single day for the Great Migration timing; the migrations of the herds take place all year round within the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Nevertheless, July to September is an important time period for tourists who would like to observe the northern migration, including possible river crossings.
According to TANAPA, the Great Migration is the most distinguishing feature of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
For a trip built specifically around migration movements, see our Great Migration itinerary.
Best Time for Calving Season
The two months of January and February stand out for wildebeest calving season, especially in the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu plains. Within these two months, many wildebeest calves may be born within a relatively short period.
It is a fascinating time for visitors who want to observe the predator-prey dynamics and the exciting process of new life being introduced to the wilderness. For a comprehensive breakdown of seasonal movements, check out our guide on the best time to visit the Serengeti.
Best Time for Birdwatching
The period from November to April is very exciting for birdwatchers since migratory birds join Tanzanian resident birds. There are many birds that live in the Serengeti, and when there is more rain, there will be greener surroundings, and hence more birds.
If you are very interested in seeing birds on your tour, then it might be good if you focus more on the habitat than on the season of your trip.
What If You Can Only Travel in the Off-Season?
April and May are sometimes forgotten as they are situated in the middle of Tanzania’s long rains season. However, off-season safaris are not wasted trips at all.
Landscapes might be exceptionally green, skies might provide unique photographic conditions, and tourist sights might not be overcrowded. It is especially convenient to use Ngorongoro in an itinerary as it has a crater ecosystem that has permanent water, and animals live here all year round.
There is also another advantage. Potentially low accommodation prices depending on the lodge, itinerary, and dates of travel. Some lodges operate only during drier seasons of the year, and therefore it is important to select the right camps.
This is when a private safari becomes especially useful. At Proud African Safaris, seasonal wildlife behavior patterns are considered when creating an itinerary, and each day can be arranged flexibly, as travelers do not have to follow a group tour timetable.
Combining Wildlife Safari Timing With a Zanzibar Beach Extension
A safari coupled with a visit to Zanzibar can transform a wildlife safari into a larger vacation package. The best Tanzania Zanzibar timing would be from June through October, which coincides with ideal beach weather in Zanzibar, whereas January is an equally good choice for safaris combined with calving season.
What needs to be remembered is that you must create your itinerary as a single trip rather than thinking of Zanzibar as a kind of add-on. The length of your safari, internal flights, locations of your lodges, and the length of your stay at the beach can influence the entire trip.
If you are considering a safari and beach itinerary, explore our Zanzibar options and plan the timing around both wildlife and coastal conditions.
Crowds & Pricing: When to Go for the Best Value
The cost of the safari package depends on the type of accommodation, location of the lodge, travel dates, length, and availability of the itinerary. Normally, the period during which there is wildlife abundance or migration could command higher rates for the accommodation, while April and May could offer good value, provided that the properties are still operating.
Proud African Safaris currently operates three main accommodation options:
- Deluxe
- Luxury
- Luxury Plus
An itinerary of the Great Migration gives the cost of the accommodation as approximately $980 for the adults in the Deluxe level; $1,250 for the normal luxury and approximately $1,950 for the luxury plus, all based on the given sample itinerary and double occupancy.
Important Note: Choosing an off-season date does not automatically mean every safari becomes inexpensive, just as traveling in peak season does not mean every itinerary costs the same.
Our Recommendations: How We Plan Around Tanzania’s Seasons
Our approach is straightforward: decide on your destination and construct the itinerary around the season.
For instance, if your main concern is classic dry-season game viewing, June-October makes perfect sense to begin with. However, if you would like to have the experience of wildebeest calving, January-February is going to modify both your itinerary and the choice of accommodation. If bird watching or green scenery and off-season travel matter most to you, November-May is probably a better option for your Tanzania vacation.

Is Tanzania worth visiting in the rainy season?
Yes. The rainy season can bring lush scenery, fewer visitors, and potentially better value. Wildlife remains present, and destinations such as Ngorongoro have permanent water and resident wildlife. The key consideration is choosing suitable lodges and building the itinerary around seasonal road and camp conditions.
What’s the difference between Tanzania’s northern and southern safari circuits?
The Northern Circuit includes destinations such as Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. This circuit offers strong wildlife opportunities almost throughout the year. Southern Circuit includes destinations such as Ruaha and Nyerere. These areas are strongly influenced by dry-season water concentration. Proud African Safaris currently focuses on Northern Tanzania.
When should I visit if I want to combine a safari with Zanzibar?
June through October is the best choice for combining a classic dry-season safari with a Zanzibar beach stay. January can also work well, specifically for travelers interested in combining the Serengeti’s calving period with time on the coast. The perfect choice depends on your safari priorities and preferred beach experience.
