Tarangire National Park

Elephants, baobabs and river country in a quieter corner of Tanzania.
Discover one of Northern Tanzania’s most distinctive safari landscapes.

A safari shaped by elephants, water and wild landscapes

Tarangire lies southeast of Lake Manyara and is named after the Tarangire River. Its mix of riverine forest, swamps, open savanna and baobab-dotted landscapes gives every game drive a distinctive character.

The swamps and river are the heart of Tarangire

The Tarangire River and seasonal swamps shape where wildlife gathers. During the dry season, animals concentrate around remaining water sources.

Elephants are the signature sight, alongside zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland. Lions, leopards and tree-climbing pythons add to the drama.

Wildlife worth slowing down for

Patient game drives reveal why Tarangire is such a rewarding Northern Circuit stop.

When is the best time to visit Tarangire?

Tarangire can be visited year-round. June to October is especially rewarding for concentrated wildlife viewing, while January and February offer another strong dry period.

A natural complement to the Northern Circuit

Combine Tarangire with Serengeti for the Great Migration, Ngorongoro for its crater setting, or other northern destinations for a richer Tanzania safari.
