A Serengeti safari is about more than the migration
Serengeti National Park is the best-known wildlife sanctuary on earth, unmatched for its natural beauty and scientific value. With roughly two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson’s gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra moving across its plains, it holds the greatest concentration of grazing animals anywhere in Africa — the cast behind the annual Great Migration.
Even when the migration has moved on, the Serengeti still delivers spectacular game viewing, from golden-maned lions and buffalo to elephant, giraffe, eland, topi, impala and Grant’s gazelle.

The land behind the legend
The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai language and means ‘endless plains’ — a fitting description for a park spanning 12,950 square kilometers, roughly the size of Northern Ireland. Its wider ecosystem, which stretches to include the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Maswa Game Reserve, and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, is closer to the size of Kuwait.
Bordered by Lake Victoria to the west, Lake Eyasi to the south, and the Great Rift Valley to the east, it remains one of the most complete and least disturbed ecosystems left on earth.
“The annual wildebeest migration, when up to a million animals cross the rivers in search of fresh grazing, is a spectacle worth planning a trip around.”
Months before the migration begins, wildebeest give birth to hundreds of thousands of calves within a six-week window — a burst of new life that predators are quick to take advantage of.
