Top Things to Do in Tanzania: Best Experiences for First-Time Visitors

Written by:
Things to Do in Tanzania

There is far more to do in Tanzania than the average first-time visitor can fit into one trip, and this is both why it is such an attractive destination and the pitfall that trips up planners the most. The typical mistake is that people try to cram everything into one trip. What works better is to select a few key anchors, allow ample time for each experience, and include one extension. This guide provides details on the number of days required for each main experience, the right combinations, what is possible for first-time visitors, and what US travelers need to know about visiting Tanzania.

Proud African Safaris is known for providing customized trips to places like the Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire, where you can choose a schedule that best suits your preferences.

How to Choose: Protect Three Things, Add One

First Tanzania trip? Protect three things:

  • Your safari days
  • Speed
  • Downtime

And then, choose an additional element of your vacation that will make it special for you.

The first priority should be the Serengeti. It needs a few days, not just a quick drive-through. The second one is either Ngorongoro or Tarangire, based on your personal preferences. And then, think about what your additional activity will be:

Zanzibar, culture, hiking, or anything else?

The problem lies in trying to squeeze a full safari, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and a number of remote parks into one week. You might be able to see them all, but you will end up spending too much of your holiday traveling from park to park.

7-8 days is enough for a good northern safari; 10-12 days can fit both safari and Zanzibar; two weeks give you some flexibility.

The Safari Experiences

Serengeti: Game Drives and the Great Migration

Consider the Serengeti National Park the centerpiece of most first-time luxury Tanzania safari packages. A span of 3-4 days should be sufficient if time is available. This will enable your guide to visit various places instead of going from one landmark to another in a hurry.

This park has huge populations of plains animals and forms the core area of the Great Migration, which takes place every year. However, this does not mean that you must come at the time of the migration for a good safari experience.

Ngorongoro Crater

Give yourself a full day or two days, depending on how leisurely you wish to go about things. The Ngorongoro Crater is especially helpful for new visitors since its smaller environment can produce an abundance of animals in a small space.

The crater also fits perfectly into a northern circuit tour between Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Serengeti.

Tarangire

Tarangire deserves at least one to two days, especially if you are interested in elephant sightings and great scenery. Since wildlife concentrates at the few water sources in the dry season, this offers perfect opportunities for game viewing. Proud African Safaris calls Tarangire a destination worth visiting even when there is not enough time for the Serengeti.

Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara makes an excellent single-day destination for the northern circuit. It is the perfect blend of lake environment, forest, open plain, and birdlife, and thus gives visitors a break from the large savanna parks.

This park serves a great purpose in trip planning since it helps to link Arusha, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro without making a detour.

Balloon and Walking Safaris

Balloon safaris give you an entirely new view of the Serengeti, while walking safaris tend to make the safari slower-paced, with a focus on tracks, plants, small animals, and the environment.

There may be availability, routing, age restrictions, and costs that differ for each experience, so make sure to clarify what type and cost you will have before planning.

Beyond the Safari

Zanzibar: Stone Town, Spice Tours, and Beaches

Zanzibar is the simplest way to transform a wildlife-oriented safari into a Tanzania holiday.

You can spend time discovering Stone Town, take a spice tour, relax on the beaches, and do water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, or sailing. Proud African Safaris also provides tailor-made Zanzibar trips with various activities like historical tours, spice tours, and aquatic adventures.

For first-timers, 2-4 days will be an ideal duration after the northern safari.

Mount Kilimanjaro: Day Hike or Summit?

A unique aspect of Mount Kilimanjaro is that its climb is not something you can tag along with on the same day as a tourist activity.

If your purpose is the climb itself, then you plan your trip with it in mind. Otherwise, if it is only something to see, you can easily fit Mount Kilimanjaro views within the scope of a northern Tanzania trip.

Cultural Experiences, Done Respectfully

A cultural tour becomes more meaningful when the experience is guided by locals and participatory in nature.

The ideal experiences are those where the local people guide you and interact with you rather than giving you pre-planned tours. Respect the wishes of the local community and ask for permission to take pictures of them.

Arusha: Don’t Waste the First Day

Arusha is much more than a stopover point for sleeping ahead of your safari. Use your arrival time to rest, taste local cuisine, visit a market, or organize an experience.

However, if you arrive late on an international flight, do not stress yourself with organizing something. You will probably appreciate being well-rested for your safari more.

The Deeper Cuts

Olduvai Gorge is an archaeological gem for travelers who have a bit more time to spare, while those looking for a truly unique experience may head north to Ol Doinyo Lengai.

Both of these should be considered purposeful additions rather than obligatory stops.

What to Skip on Your First Trip

The southern and western circuit may well be impressive, although they typically involve more time and extra flights to integrate effectively into a northern route.

This is also true of Mafia Island, Mahale, and Gombe. These destinations make for great special-interest trips, but incorporating them into a new Serengeti/Ngorongoro circuit may make your trip feel like just a transfer journey.

For a first visit, focus on the Northern Circuit + one extension.

Planning From the United States

Your Time Budget

As for US travelers, bear in mind that Tanzania will be quite far. You must plan your trip taking into consideration the time spent travelling from your country.

In case you are staying in Tanzania for only one week, you must choose the northern route for your safari. In case you have 10-12 days at your disposal, you may think of spending some time on Zanzibar. Two weeks will give you more flexibility for your choice.

The most important thing here is not the quantity but the quality of the visit to these places.

Visa, Passport, and Health: What to Check

American passport holders intending to visit Tanzania for vacation purposes need to obtain a Multiple Entry Visa, which the Tanzania Immigration says costs $100 and has a maximum validity period of one year. In addition, according to the official eVisa program website, passports are supposed to be valid for at least six months and have a blank visa page.

The application should be done using the official Tanzania Immigration eVisa website, and not unauthorized visa websites.

Health requirements need to be looked into in advance. According to the CDC, a traveler needs to contact a healthcare professional at least a month in advance of travel, and it mentions that malaria occurs in Tanzania. Yellow fever vaccination is normally not needed if you arrive in Tanzania directly from the US, although the entry requirements may vary depending on the past travel history in countries with yellow-fever risk.

Please look at the US State Department travel advisory for more information.

What to Pack and Tip

Go with the light stuff: neutral colors, comfortable walking shoes, sunblock, sunglasses, hat, insect repellent, binoculars, camera gear, and your medications.

Your safari guides and planners will give you specific packing tips and guidelines for tipping at your particular destination.

When to Go

There is no one perfect month for every adventure in Tanzania. The dry season offers fantastic wildlife watching, and other seasons offer unique events such as calving, migration, and greener surroundings.

Check if the season fits what you would like to see before making your arrangements. To learn more about the best time to visit Tanzania, follow Proud African Safaris.

How We Plan First-Time Trips

A visit to Tanzania for the first time must be personalized, not just following a set itinerary.

Proud African Safaris plans private safaris tailor-made according to your interests, schedule, and pacing requirements. A private custom safari involves having a private safari car with a Naturalist guide, while flexible itineraries allow you more time in places where there is abundant wildlife. Talk to our specialized team members for more information about Tanzania travel packages.

The team specializes in the northern circuit, with places such as Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire, and provides unlimited game drives as part of their private safari package.

It implies that your first safari can be customized according to your needs, rather than trying to accommodate as many sights as possible in your itinerary.
